Trileptal is the branded anti-epileptic drug produced by using the
active pharmaceutical ingredient called Oxcarbazepine by Novartis.
Like any other medication, this drug too may cause some mild to
sever side effects. The common most side effects reported by using
this medication include: lightheadedness, drowsiness, double or
abnormal vision, fatigue or weakness, nausea, vomiting,
in-coordination, abdominal pain, tremor or shiver, indigestion and
abnormal gait one or all typically mild top moderate in severity
both in adults and children. The side effects in children
exceptionally reported certain infections and infestations
especially noticed more in children below 4 years of age.
Also it is worth remembering that consumption of alcohol may enhance
drowsiness so it should be avoided during this therapy. Also a
condition known as hyponatremia which means low sodium levels may be
observed in some patients under treatment of this medication. Even
Anaphylaxis and angioedema may be reported in some patients taking
this drug and their condition may often become life threatening
also. Anaphylaxis may be severe and abrupt and its symptoms may
include difficulty breathing, chest tightness, fainting, and
giddiness besides other allergic symptoms that involve entire body
also.
While the condition of angioedema could be characterized by swelling
of the face, eyes, lips or tongue and difficulty swallowing or
breathing. In case of such reaction is noticed in the patient then
he should discontinue taking medication and rush to the doctor for
immediate medical assistance. When this drug is used with birth
control pills, it minimizes the effect of birth control pills hence
both the medications should not be taken without consulting the
physician.
